Denny Hamlin Wins 3rd Daytona 500

It’s Tuesday. Denny Hamlin earned his second straight Daytona 500 win and third overall in an overtime photo finish. However, the post race celebration was subdued due to a violent wreck involving Ryan Newman on the final lap. Newman, driver of the No. 6 Koch Industries Ford struck the wall and was then hit by Corey LaJoie, driver of the No. 32 RagingBull.com Ford, sending Newman’s car airborne and skidding on its roof engulfed in flames down the straightaway. Incredibly, NASCAR says Newman is in serious condition but with non-life-threatening injuries.

Safety has come a long way since Earnhardt’s death in 2001… and this is certainly proof.
