2020 Chevrolet Corvette VIN 001 Sells for $3M at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale

It’s Wednesday. The very first production 2020 Corvette was auctioned off for 3 million at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was purchased by NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick, who has a large collection of VIN#001 vehicles.  The proceeds from the sale went to the Detroit Children’s Fund, a nonprofit agency that supports Detroit’s schools.

I made several bids but was out of the running when they surpassed my $25 dollar limit.

The first 2020 model year Corvette available for sale to a customer was auctioned off Saturday night for $3 million. The redesigned model is the first Corvette with its engine mounted behind the seats, rather than in the front under the hood.

The car was donated by General Motors (GM)and all proceeds from the auction went to charity. The car was sold at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale, Arizona auction, an annual event with a tradition of offering first editions of new performance cars for charity.

Charity auctions like this often result in high dollar-figure sales. Bidders have even been known to outbid themselves in order to make their donation more generous. The final selling price does not necessarily reflect the inherent market value of the car.
At the same event, the first Lexus LC 500 convertible was sold for $2 million for charity. At last year’s auction, the first new Toyota Supra was sold for $2.1 million.
“VIN 001” of any car is genuinely worth more than others of that same car, though, notes Jonathan Klinger, a spokesman for Hagerty, a collector car lifestyle and insurance company.

General Motors CEO Mary Barra was at the event and introduced the Corvette sale. The $3 million from the sale went to the Detroit Children’s Fund, a nonprofit agency that supports Detroit’s schools.

The winning bidder was NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick. Last year, Hendrick paid $2.5 million for a 2019 Ford GT Heritage Edition.

The new Corvette was recently named the North American Car of the Year by a jury of automotive journalists. It was also named the Motor Trend Car of the Year in November.

Attack of the Horrid White Stuff

It’s Tuesday. Ack! Recently there was a rather nasty snowstorm that dumped 30 inches of the horrid white stuff on St. John’s, Newfoundland. As if that wasn’t enough, there were also winds gusts clocked at 81 mph. They called it “Snowmageddon” and it ended up setting a new record.

Featured today is a 24 hour video time-lapse of the storm in just 30 seconds.

And coincidentally, 30 seconds is all the time I would need to decide to move the hell out of St. John’s!

Lazy Ass

It’s Monday. Okay, so we had snow, freezing rain, normal rain, and high winds. And then the temperature took a dive into the single digits. It was the perfect weekend to stay indoors and be really lazy.

And that’s exactly what I did! On Saturday I flipped on Epix and Iron Man 2 was just starting. I hadn’t seen it in ages, so I settled in and watched it. Immediately after that Thor came on. I hadn’t seen that one in ages either, so I watched it. It was followed by Captain America, which is really good, so I watched it as well. As you might expect, Avengers was up next so I caught that as well. That pretty much killed the day, but I enjoyed every minute of it. I could’ve gone for another movie, but it was getting late and I was tired from all the non-activity.

My Sunday was very similar but instead of Marvel movies, I tossed on recent recordings of Mecum collector car auctions in Kissimmee, Florida. I had those on all afternoon and I loved every second. It’s a seemingly endless parade of automotive goodness that once you start watching is practically impossible to stop. I never really tried to stop, but if I had I’m sure it would’ve been tough.
