Nascar Part 2

It’s Wednesday. I was very pleased to hear the news that the U.S. Attorney and the FBI concluded their investigation and determined that Bubba Wallace was not the target of a hate crime. The FBI report concludes, and photographic evidence confirms, that the garage door pull rope fashioned like a noose had been positioned there since as early as last fall. This was obviously well before the 43 team’s arrival and garage assignment. NASCAR senior vice president and chief communications officer, Eric Nyquist, said that the sanctioning body’s own investigation was continuing.

TALLADEGA, Ala. — After a careful investigation, U.S. Attorney Jay Town and the FBI report the noose found in Bubba Wallace’s garage had been there since October 2019.

U.S. Attorney Town and FBI Special Agent Johnnie Sharp, Jr. conducted numerous interviews regarding the situation at Talladega Superspeedway. After a thorough review of the facts and evidence surrounding this event, they concluded that no federal crime was committed.

The FBI learned that garage number 4, where the noose was found, was assigned to Bubba Wallace last week. The investigation also revealed evidence, including authentic video confirmed by NASCAR, that the noose found in garage number 4 was in that garage as early as October 2019. Although the noose is now known to have been in garage number 4 in 2019, nobody could have known Wallace would be assigned to garage number 4 last week, the statement said.

Nascar

It’s Tuesday. Bubba Wallace is an African-American who drives for Richard Petty Motorsports in Nascar’s highest and most competitive series. The other day someone hung a noose in his garage area at the Talladega Superspeedway. As a Nascar fan I found this act disgusting. It was most likely in retaliation for Wallace strongly encouraging Nascar to ban the Confederate flag from all of its racing venues, which they ultimately did.

I don’t want to get into the debate of whether removing the Confederate flag is right or wrong, but I will say that hanging a noose in his garage was exceptionally racist and inexcusable. The incident is now being investigated by Nascar, the U.S. Attorney, the FBI and the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

Prior to the start of Monday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway, drivers and crew members offered a unified show of support for Wallace when they pushed his No. 43 Chevrolet to the front of the grid during pre-race activities. Wallace was inside the car wearing a face mask and sunglasses that covered his face. When he got out though, Wallace was overcome with emotion as he rested his head atop his hands on the hood, body shaking with tears. His team owner, Richard Petty, who had not attended a race since the COVID-19 pandemic began, was there and put his hand on Wallace’s back to steady him.

After the race Wallace apologized for not wearing a mandatory mask because, “I wanted to show whoever it was, you are not going to take away my smile.”

Tasty Grillin’

It’s Monday. I hope everyone had a good Father’s Day yesterday. We had some decent weather so we enjoyed a cookout with the family. Bratwurst, hotdogs, and Italian sausage were all on the grill with all the usual sides. The food was fantastic and everyone seemed to have a really nice time. It’s several hours later that I’m writing this and I’m still painfully full. Oh, and I hope everyone enjoyed the special Father’s Day collection of babes.

Unfortunately in Alabama the rain did fall, so the race in Talladega was bumped to Monday afternoon. I’ll be working from my home office so I should be able to watch it live.

I read that Cadet Bone Spurs was extremely disappointed by the low turnout at his rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I bet that really pissed him off. I also saw that the family of the late Tom Petty filed a cease-and-desist notice to the Trump campaign after they played his 1989 hit “I Won’t Back Down” during the rally.

“Trump was in no way authorized to use this song to further a campaign that leaves too many Americans and common sense behind,” the family said in a tweet Saturday.

Sweet.
